I Don't Live Here Any More!

...which is to say, I'll no longer be posting here.

But don't worry, the Rainbow Chronicles aren't dead! We've just moved. Please come visit! I can promise more frequent posts, and ... well, that's about it.

Find me here: alisonhamm.com

Thanks for reading, and following, Chasing the End of My Rainbow.

It's My Baby's Birthday! The Rainbow Chronicles Turn 3

Holy crap, you guys. So, I've been sitting here, watching Young Frankenstein and painting my nails (don't even pretend you're not jealous of this wild Wednesday evening) and I remembered:

Today, the Rainbow Chronicles turn 3! If only I had some Funfetti! Quick, go get a cupcake to eat while you read this!

It seems that last year, I neglected to host a blogging birthday celebration—I was far too busy feeling a lot of feelings about my recent discovery of James Blake—but this year, I'm in more of a celebratory mood. I mean, Gene Wilder and Peter Boyle are dancing on the television right now, and if that doesn't put you in the partying mood, what will?

For the first birthday bash, in 2010, back when I was still a young girl of 25, I recapped my favorite moments of my first full year of blogging. There was a lot of talk about Swayze, Schwinn Breezes named Patricia, and waiting tables. And of course, some more serious posts about family and my seemingly never-ending job search.

Now, two years later, though Sunday Swayze Fest may not happen as often as we'd all like (and by "we" of course I mean "I"), I can still say with all honesty that my most recent viewing of Dirty Dancing was three days ago and I now own a t-shirt with Patrick Swayze on it (clutch Christmas gift from Jay and Jasmine). So never fear, faithful Rainbow groupies. Swayze Fest will always be here in my heart, if not every Sunday on this blog.

And while I still occasionally have elaborate daydreams about riding my Schwinn Breeze all over town, I think we all know in reality I'm far too clumsy and terrified of Chicago traffic for that to happen more than twice every three years.

Speaking of clumsy—today at the coffee shop, I may or may not have knocked a framed record off the wall. Glass shattered, people stared, and I turned beet red, slumped into my seat, and cursed my elbows.

Back to the birthday bash, and away from my awkwardness, if at all possible. One thing I love about looking back over the last three years of blogging is how, in many ways, it's a tidy chronicle of my life. Of course, it's not a complete chronicle, and it never should or will be one, but as I look back I remember a lot—good and bad. Sometimes I laugh. Sometimes I cry. Sometimes I think, "What kind of a creep reads her own blog archive?" But basically, looking back over this blog on its "birthday" makes me happy, and it makes me a little sentimental. Kind of like an actual birthday.

Three years ago, I sat in my first Chicago apartment's kitchen, listened to some Fiona Apple, and braved my first blog post, "Small Town and Scared Shitless in the Big City." Looking back, I'm almost shocked by my fears of exploring new places, and I'm still a little embarrassed about sharing those fears with the Interwebs. I may no longer be the young woman who's "scared shitless in the big city," but I don't mind admitting that no matter how long I live in Chicago, I'll still be that same "small town" girl who listens to Fiona and enjoys hanging out with my cats in the comfort of my home.

I recently reread A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Like many of my books, it was originally my mother's, and I vaguely remembered reading it when I was younger. When I found an index card tucked in the pages with my name and a sequence of numbers on it, I realized with glee that it was my 7th grade locker combination. I loved every minute re-reading the story of Francie and her family. Pretty much all of my reading happens in one of two places: on the train to and from work, or in bed. Sometimes, I get a little self-conscious after being completely absorbed in a book on a crowded train—I can only imagine the faces I must have been making as, teary eyed, I read the scene where Francie's mother shoots the man attempting to attack Francie in the stairwell. When I realized I was at my stop, I shoved the book in my bag and noticed some middle-aged guy was giving me a similar look to the ones I give the people shouting nonsensically in public. (Yes, that happens. I blogged about it.) But hey, if my funny faces keep a fellow commuter entertained on their commute, so be it.

As it happens, I was on the train when I finished the book. It was a beautiful ending to a beautiful book. I didn't care that the train was crowded, and I was sitting in a seat directly facing strangers. I smiled to myself, closed the book slowly, and then reopened it to the first page, where my mother had written her name 18 years earlier. I ran my index finger across her name and sighed.

It was a happy feeling. It was a little sentimental. It was something to be remembered.

Thanks for reading my little blog these last three years. Any time I find out someone's read any of these essays, rants, or even just a long, winding sentence I wrote, it makes me feel just like that.

kisses,
Alison(composes)

In Which I Embark on an Experiment

Hey Groupies!

Don't be scared. It's not THAT kind of experiment. What does that even mean? I really don't know.

Anyway! The experiment. The experiment!

It's kind of a crazy notion, considering how bleak the Rainbow Chronicles have been looking all of 2011. Only an average of seven posts a month? How pathetic.

I am going to write something every day for the next 10 days. And I am going to post it. And you are going to read it. And then you're going to pay me. (Just kidding. But if you want to pay me, that's fine. I accept cash, but Layla and Mufasa prefer money order.)

I'm looking at it as sort of a jump-start exercise routine for my writing brain. I've gotten so caught up writing Groupons all day long that my other writing has suffered. My blog, once a finely toned bicep, has turned to flab. Ugggh. See? I can't even think of a fucking metaphor.

And now that I have told you all about this experiment, you can scold me, via the Interwebs, if I don't follow through.

Cool? Cool.

I'm glad we had this talk, Blogger.

kisses,
Alison

What a Weirdo!

If you read the post below, you might be wondering:

Did Alison start smoking crack? Is that why she's become the blurst blogger ever, and sort of, but not quite disappeared, then wrote this crazy shit?

Um, no. I didn't start smoking crack. Swear it.

Sometimes, I have really intense dreams. Often, I write them down afterward. Often, I also write somewhat nonsensical poems about them.

Today, I decided to play with it.

Ta-Dah! Happy Monday, bitches!

Will You Ever Forgive Me?

Yikes. Apparently I've started a new trend on the Rainbow Chronicles that involves me only posting on Mondays. And only about music. I swear my brain is not totally devoid of all thoughts except this. I swear it. I know you've all been crying and screaming at your computer screens:

"Where are the poetry slams?! The awesomely awkward adventures?! The magical moments waiting tables?!

AND WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO SUNDAY SWAYZE FEST?!!!!!"

Am I right? I knew it. Don't fret, my darlings. I have not forgotten you. More poetry slams are in the works. I am still always, always, awesomely awkward. Living in Knightstown just doesn't seem to warrant the awkward adventures that being in Chicago did. Maybe that has something to do with the fact that when I'm not at work, I'm hanging out in my childhood bedroom, having long debates with my cats? I mean ... WHAT? I don't talk to my cats. That would be weird. And speaking of work, I had to sign a "social media contract," which essentially means I'm no longer allowed to document my current magical moments waiting tables. Sigh. I will say this: There have been plenty this summer. PLENTY.

As for Swayze fest ... well, it's just been too hard. Although my brother Tom and I are still planning our North and South marathon, which might actually happen one of these days.

Two other major excuses for not blogging: I've been working on a submission for an essay contest, and my brother Jay got married this past weekend. In other words, I am unable to concentrate on more than two things at once.

I'm not quite yet ready to work on my entry for the Writer's Digest Short Short Story competition this year, so maybe I'll actually blog consistently for a bit.

Maybe. I'm not making any promises.

Miss Me?

I bet you do! Well, don't fret, Rainbow groupies, I didn't leave you... I've just been a little (by little I mean A LOT) preoccupied with packing, moving, and job interviewing. I also can't seem to get my $#%!ing wireless router set up here, so I'm kind of freaking out without my Macbook right now.

Yeah, I'm back in Indiana.

More on all this later, I promise. Probably more than you want to know.

The Rainbow Chronicles are 1!

A year ago today, a young Hoosier girl sat in her kitchen ... and created a Blogger account.

A lot has changed since that first post—and a lot hasn't. I've rambled about my awesomely awkward adventures in Chicago, ranted about magical moments waiting tables, and shared my love of Patrick Swayze to the world. Err, the followers of this blog.

And since it's my blog's birthday, I thought I'd share some of my favorite posts from the last year. Some of these got a lot of comments, some of them got zero. But these are the ones that I either giggled to myself as I wrote them, cringed as I hit "Publish Post" (but then was glad I did), or breathed a sigh of relief after writing.

Et voila, my favorite Rainbow Chronicle moments:
•Thursday, June 25, 2009: The New BK Blow Job! I Mean, Sandwich!
Because sometimes, sexism in advertising is just so ridiculous, it's funny.

•Monday, May 18, 2009: Countdown to Schwinn Breeze: 11 Days!
Best birthday present, ever. Now let’s just hope this summer, I’m brave enough to ride it more than 5 times in the city. Plus, this post has
Pee Wee’s Big Adventure clips. And what’s better than that? In fact, here’s another post about Patricia!

•Thursday, July 2, 2009: The 4th of July Syndrome
One of my favorite pieces about my mom. When I reread it, I feel comforted and a little sad, all at once.

•Wednesday, July 15, 2009: More Magical Moments Waiting Tables
Because this really encapsulates the awkward hilarity that can happen while waiting tables.

•Thursday, July 30, 2009: Yet another example of why my pops is the SH*T
My father is the shit. I wrote about it.
•Monday, October 5, 2009: Mondays, Mums, and Mom
This post somehow sums up my frustrations with my job search, my restlessness to be doing something valuable with my life, my love for reading, and how much I miss my mom. Damn, that’s kinda too many topics for one little blog post. I feel a whole lot of feelings.

Geez. I swear, I didn't just look at the July archive when selecting these. These really are my favorites.

So, what do you think? What were your favorite moments at the Rainbow Chronicles? Tell me about it!

I'd also like to give a shout out to my most faithful follower and commenter: my big brother Jay. You know how I said my dad is the shit? Well, oddly enough, my brother is too.

Now, I know all three of you who voted for Swazye Fest as part of the bday bash will be crying yourselves to sleep if I don't leave you with this:

Oh, Patrick! SWOON! (You're welcome.)

It's been a good year, I think. Please, stick around for another one. I promise you won't regret it.

Love,
Alison (AKA "alisoncomposes")

Negligence and work and such

My poor, poor blog. It just looks sad and rejected lately, doesn't it? Well, hopefully you all haven't given up on me. The negligence is (mostly) due to my crazy work schedule as of late. There have been so many magical moments waiting tables lately that I really should be sharing! Plus, it's gotten a little crazier lately because I, yet again, have taken on another internship. Except this time I refuse to call it an internship. I'm working part-time for The Media Consortium, which so far has been a great experience.

Not only is it about five minutes away from my apartment, it is also around the corner from my local Starbucks AND...my Thai restaurant. (Yes, my Thai restaurant, Anong.) And, even better, they actually treat me like a human being! I get to do real work! Hoorah!

So, please forgive me for neglecting the rainbow chronicles. Hopefully I'll get used to working two jobs again soon, and can find more time for the important things. Like blogging.

"We're not Mexicans, we're from out of town."

I just woke up from my Kuma's-induced food coma to realize that I now have 20 groupies. Err, followers. Yes! Soon, I will be famous.

This is how I plan to celebrate:

"We don't got no beer—just tequila."

Okay, so in reality, I'm going to go see Inglourious Basterds, but in my mind I'm dancing with the three amigos.

Home Sweet Home

Okay, I know August was not a good blogging month for me. But now it's officially September, summer is officially over, and I took a sorely needed long weekend in Indiana which has given me the inspiration to get off my uninspired ass and blog again.

However, you're going to have to wait just a little bit longer for a "real" post, as I am still at Poppa Hamm's house. He's making omelets. I'm in heaven.

While at home, I schooled my cousin Ian on blog etiquette, and I'm happy to see that for once, he actually listened to me and is now following my blog. The visit home has provided me with so much blog material that I'm overwhelmed and will have to spend the drive up 65 plotting which parts to share on the blogosphere.

Do I write about Ian's coyote and black panther conversation? The number of Asians at Rib Fest? The number of white teenagers chain smoking Marlboros at Rib Fest? Scolding Butler undergrads at the Margot & the Nuclear So and So's show? The cat training school my Uncle Roy has encouraged me to start? My dad calling Debbie while in the same house?

Simply too much material. I'm going to eat my omelet.

Sincerest Apologies, Rainbow Groupies!

After receiving yet another fan email asking where the hell I've been, I decided it was time to pull out my Macbook, open the blinds, blast some Eurythmics, and snap out of my Funk. Obviously by 'yet another fan email' I mean my brother emailed me, but that's beside the point, isn't it? If I'm going to become a famous blogger, I probably should, umm, blog.

So where the hell have I been? Sure, some time has been spent holed up in my room streaming Netflix and feeling sorry for myself because my bills keep getting more expensive while I get paid less, but there's also been some crazy shit going on that was deserving of some love in the Rainbow Chronicles.

Let's recap.

My oldest brother Tom is now in Afghanistan for his second tour of duty, better described as his second year away from his wife and kids. I'm sure he'll come back just fine, but we'll miss him nonetheless. So pray, send warm thoughts, or whatever it is you might do in this kind of situation. Tom is 14 years older than me, so he's basically been my hero since I was a little kid.

He's also probably the only person I enjoy drinking Coors Light out of a can with. The pic here was from the weekend I went home to tell him bye. It was the most time I've spent hanging out with my brother and my nephews in a really long time. That afternoon, Jackson (the one in the photo) said, "Auntie Al, you're not going to a wear a dress again tomorrow, are you?" I learned my lesson. If you want street cred with the nephews who are sporting mohawks, don't wear your hippie-tastic dress. Save it for the outdoor concerts.

What else? Last Friday, I finally lost my virginity to Wrigley Field and saw my first Cubs game. Pretty sure my company was getting a little tired of me saying repeatedly, "Barack wouldn't like this. Barack just wouldn't approve." But other than that, it was a blast. We befriended the guys sitting next to us while we were loudly trying to guess the name of the best friend and the girlfriend characters in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. (Cameron and Sloane, DUH. Although in retrospect, I'm pretty sure I loudly declared that her name was Simone. Shit.)

After the game, we went to one of the silly Wrigley bars, and when we were outside, who should walk by but Ari! I mean, Jeremy Piven. He was with his entourage. Ha, ha. HA! Of course we decide to stand outside and wait for him to leave the bar next door. As he's leaving, we see him take a picture with a couple of girls. He walked out, and as I was working up the courage to speak, my friend asked if he'd take a picture with me.

Jeremy Piven looks at me. I smile. He looks me up and down. "No, but you can have a hat." And he walks away. Hmmph. I was on the brink of feeling pretty rejected, but then I realized: Jeremy Piven gave me a hat! And he's short!

I began parading around Wrigleyville doing things of this nature:

No, I'm not proud of myself. What a stupid hat. Luckily Wrigleyville is full of white girls engaging in even more embarrassing behavior, so for once in my life, I sort of fit in with the crowd.

Basically the rest of my time not blogging has been spent waiting tables, staring at my checking account with my heart pounding rapidly, and to be perfectly honest, feeling a little sorry for myself and watching too much Netflix.

However, I did go see The Time Traveler's Wife with Beth last Sunday! And I can say with complete confidence that Beth is with me when I tell all of you haters this: "Bite me. It was beautiful. Read the book."

Watch Rachel McAdams give away the plot to Jon Stewart. I kind of fell in love with Rachel McAdams here, because like me, she clearly can't walk in heels very well.

M'as-tu vu? CAN YOU SEE ME?

I was checking out Blogger's Blogs of Note and daydreaming about the day when "Chasing the end of my rainbow" has the number of followers these blogs do (334? I was excited when I hit double digits.). Shortly after that, one follower, who happens to work in publishing, offers me a book deal. Obviously my book will be a bestseller. It's going to be magical.

Anyway, one of the Blogs of Note, "Avignon in Photos," quickly put a stop to my famous blog/book deal daydream and promptly started the one where I move to France and have escapades similar to the Americans in Tender is the Night and A Moveable Feast. Beth and I got a head start last night when I called her "mon petit chou" and she thought I called her a dog. Nope, just my little cabbage. Chien, chou...French is tricky.

Some of my favorites from Avignon in Photos:
"M'as-tu vu?" is a phrase I think of often (translating it as "can you see me?"), primarily when I'm waiting tables, apparently invisible to my customers. Seriously, can't you see me standing next to your table? Can you hear me asking if you want a drink? Quit ignoring me!

Maybe instead of just repeating myself loudly ("CHIPS, FRIES, OR VEGGIES?"; "DO YOU WANT A BEER?"), I'll just start screaming, "M'AS-TU VU?"

I need that book deal. Fast.

And the Pursuit of Happiness

I'm really loving Maira Kalman's illustrated blog, "And the Pursuit of Happiness" on the NYT. My favorite post is "May It Please the Court"—particularly the ending:

(It reads: “And then I come home and look at a photo of dear Eleanor Roosevelt wearing an improbable yet wonderful hat. Where does courage come from? I call my aunt in Israel. She is 92. And I ask her, “What is the most important thing?” And she answers, “Self-confidence.”)

Her most recent post, "At Ease," was a little bit of a disappoint to me for reasons I can't really pinpoint—maybe because it feels like, to a degree, she's lumping all soldiers into one tiny box? I'm not sure. But it was of particular interest to me because my brother Tom will be returning to Afghanistan for his second tour later this summer. Wonder what he'd think about it?

Either way, I think she's clever. Check it out.

Gender Across Borders

I just posted for the first time on Gender Across Borders (GAB), a new global feminist blog (I'm an editor and founder, BOO YAH).

Check it out. Comment on my post. Comment on other people's posts. It's still in the newborn stages, so obviously there are some kinks that need to be worked out with the design and all that good stuff. The content specialist still in me is freaking out and wanting everything fixed right away, but all in good time.

I'm the worst blogger ever...

because all I do is wait tables, then come home and watch It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Today I actually went into work, was told they didn't need me, so I promptly drove to Best Buy and bought the following purchases:

1). It's Always Sunny... Season 3
2). Twilight (yeah, that's right. I'm not ashamed.)
3). Peter Bjorn and John, "Living Thing"

So basically what I'm saying is, until I get through Season 3 and get worn out of dancing around to PB and J, I don't know how much blogging I can do. I'm pretty busy.

Can you blame me?

Here I Am, Finally

What aspiring writer doesn’t have a blog these days? That would be me, until about two hours ago. I’ve always written off blogs as self-important rants that no one except the blogger cares about. However, I’ve finally accepted that I’ve been dying to join the ranks of young, self-important, aspiring writers everywhere blogging their asses off.

So here I am. I’ve been thinking about starting this for a while, but it took seeing my friend Beth’s blog to finally do it. (Thanks, Beth! And I swear I didn't mean to inadvertently call your blogging self-important!)

Maybe I’ll be the only person to read this. But who knows.

But I’m writing. And that’s what’s important, self-important though it may be. I’d been hoping to come up with some kind of theme before I started a blog—something to give it some sense of significance—but I haven’t nailed that down yet. So for now, I’ll focus on me: what interests me, what pisses me off, what makes me laugh. All this as I “chase my rainbow,” the name of this blog.

If you do read my blog, I hope you enjoy it. Right now, it’s essentially my writing exercise, posted online for everyone and no one to see.
